In an announcement today, Duke Energy says it is done its stock repurchase program. The accelerated program of $1.5 billion was funded by money from having sold the company’s Midwest Commercial Generation organization.

Ralph Roberts, the founder of Comcast and a major influence on the cable TV industry, passed away on Thursday. Comcast is one of the biggest entertainment companies, and its creator was known for being a well-dressed businessman with a gentle way about him. His philanthropic ways are also remembered. At age 95, Roberts has died of natural causes. He passed away in Philadelphia.
Cocoa crops are shrinking, and that is leading to a rise in cocoa prices. The shortage of cocoa trees is due largely to the dry days and delayed application of fungicides and pesticides to protect the crops. As a result, there are about a third fewer crops than usual. The possibility now exists that cocoa farms in Ghana may not be able to deliver on all of its orders.
Toyota Motor Corp is in full-on damage control mode after its executive was arrested for breaking Japan’s law. Damage control began Friday after Julie Hamp, Toyota’s new communications chief, was arrested in Japan. Hamp has only been in this job position about two months. The arrest was made on the grounds that Hamp brought painkillers illegally into the country.
